The Perfect Homeschool Day

When I first began my homeschooling journey with my children, my image of what a perfect homeschool day was a very well set up classroom in my home, with my children quietly doing their book work at their desks, staying on task, and completing all their work effortlessly. I created that image that I had in my mind, into a beautiful home classroom for my children to use each day.

After months of feeling completely overwhelmed to make that “perfect” scenario work, I took a major pivot in our homeschool journey, and allowed myself to listen to the needs of my children and not be dictated by a rigorous schedule. I quickly transitioned my thinking and reasoning. We went from the cute classroom/desk sitting model to a perfect homeschool day around the table, on the couch, in the kitchen, in the car, on the trampoline in the yard, or, yes, on their beds, reading, writing, drawing, laughing, and exploring the world around them.

My take-away from the past eleven years: Allow the walls within your home to become your child’s safe place for learning! Allow your children to explore their interests and expand their knowledge at their speed and pace. Allowing that safe place for learning will foster that deeper love of learning in your child, that they will crave the rest of their lives!

Hi, I am Mariah, a homeschool mom of 7, and Owner and Creator of Homeschool In A Box Inc. I am currently in the thick of planning my 10th year of teaching my children at home, and despite all the bumps and learning curves in the road that comes with homeschooling, I am loving every minute of this journey.

I began homeschooling when my oldest child was beginning the 6th grade. After 6 years of sending my children to traditional public school, my husband and I prayerfully made the decision to bring our children home to learn, to adapt to their individualized learning needs. Over the past 10 years, I have taught multiple children with vast learning abilities, from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, and I have learned a lot!

From my experience, if I could summarize homeschooling with a few key words, they would be: Hard, Fun, Overwhelming, Joy, Light, Excitement, Achievement, Togetherness, Family. Follow along as I dive into the good, the bad, the fun, the hard, and the best days of being a homeschool mom of 7!
